Marielle works in psychology by day, but after work, her retro dreams of being a 40s-style pin-up girl come alive. With plans to get her Masters in psychology and dreams of having a coffee table book of her photo shoots, Marielle, who's pin-up name is Nola Chick, is aiming to be a household name. NNL: So how did you get your start in the pin-up world?
NC: I've always been a fan of pin-up and retro and the old school feel. It was actually MySpace where Bella Blue found me - she's a dancer in Fleur de Tease, a burlesque dancer - and she also likes the vintage pin-up stuff, and she thought I had a good look for it. She said, "Oh, I know a photographer, and I'll do your hair and makeup," so she really got me into it. She introduced me to Hampton Van Meter, who did my first photoshoot. So she's been really helpful, and she still does my hair and makeup for some of my shoots. She's really cool.
NNL: You're from New Orleans originally. Do you feel like that affects your love for the pin-up style?
NC: I feel like it reflects old-school New Orleans. The burlesque was here on Bourbon Street. It feels good to do it here.
NNL: Are you hoping to turn it into a career?
NC: Right now it's a hobby. If I could do more, that would be great, but I just take it as it comes. I really enjoy just doing it as a hobby and for the art right now. If I could maybe do more, that'd be fantastic, like Dita Von Teese or something, that's exciting.
NNL: How does the work come to you?
NC: I'm inspired by old pictures, Betty Page, Lily Sincere, people like that. I just meet with photographers, and we bounce ideas off each other. I'll look for clothes and lingerie that would
enhance the experience, things like that.
NNL: So you decide that you would like to do a photoshoot and contact the photographers yourself?
NC: Yes, and we'll toss ideas back and forth. You know, like, would you want to do it at an old bed and breakfast, things like that.
NNL: Have you been commissioned by anyone to do any work yet?
NC: The only calendar I've been featured in so far is the PinupLifestyle.com calendar. I think I was May. That was pretty cool. I've only been doing it for a year, so I'm still getting the feel for it.
NNL: There wasn't too much biographical information on your website, so tell me a little more about your background.
NC: As my day job, I work in psychology. I have a science degree from UNO. I hope to one day be a counselor, if the modeling thing doesn't take off. I was thinking addicts or maybe a child counselor, it
just depends. I'm going to eventually get my masters, that's a goal of mine. So that's my day job.
NNL: Who are your style icons?
NC: That's a tough one. From the past, I look at Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo, Betty Grable, and those types because they're very classic and stylish, and I wish there was more of that nowadays, more of the glamour. It's just about getting dressed up and looking nice, going on The Tonight Show and wearing a nice gown and getting done up. It's that old, classic thing that I just love.
NNL: Okay, I have to ask: What do your parents think about your pin-up work?
NC: Ha, ha, ha! They think it's interesting. I think they don't know quite what to do with it; they kind of worry about some things, me being out there obviously, but they're supportive. I think they're happy I'm doing something I enjoy.
NNL: Where do you go to find clothes for your shoots?
NC: Funky Monkey, Buffalo Exchange has great deals. They have great stuff, they really do! I get great deals there on new clothes with the tags still on. eBay is big, too.
NNL: Oh, do you ever go to Trashy Diva?
NC: I've gotten a few things from there, but I go for more Victoria's Secret vintage-y stuff... you just have to know what to look for and have an eye for it. Use your imagination and piece things together. The stuff I put together is cheap, but it looks nice.
NNL: What do you ultimately want to be working towards with this?
NC: I would love to have a name in the pin-up field; I would love to be recognized for my art. I would love to eventually come out with a coffee table book with all of my shoots, that would be great. But for right now, it's a hobby. It's fine with me that a few people know me locally and that's about it.
