Self-described as the “only nightclub in the Quarter,” Jackson Brewery Bistro Bar (a.k.a. Jax Bistro) delivers an enormous, multi-level “Victorian Industrial” complex a virtual stone’s throw from Jackson Square. The crowd is diverse, with a good mix of visitors, local college students, preppies and hipsters, mostly 18 to 30. The music is loud and current, it’s a non-smoking venue, and the main room holds a dance floor (and people really dance here) and a stage with a wall-sized screen broadcasting music videos. A second bar room with views of the river and Decatur leads to a large outdoor patio balcony with plenty of seating.

Check out Jax very organized website, which thoughtfully includes a current weather report, for a look at any given night’s specials, like Ladies’ Night $2 martinis, or Rainy Day $1 shots. The Sunset Special from 5 to sunset features $2 local beers and two-for-one appetizers. Don’t miss Open Bar Thursdays ($10 from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.) with live music and two-for-one drinks all night – a blitz that may recall the glory days of the Hangar for locals. And yes, the “bistro” in “Jackson Brewery Bistro Bar” means a full menu featuring an eclectic mix of upscale bar food and local favorites, like cheese fries, po-boys, “gatorballs,” and Creole-influenced seafood and steak entrees. – Samantha Fleming
