Description
If you’re looking for a reprieve from the bright neon, boozy concoctions, and colorful scents of Bourbon Street, head to the Bombay Club—a sophisticated, intimate hideout tucked into a corner of the Prince Conti Hotel. It’s a throwback to the glory days of the British Empire. The hunter green leather chairs are roomy, the dark wood dining room and bar feels like an old English study, and the atmosphere is distinctly clubby. But don’t mistake posh for pretentious and boring. Recent changes behind the bar and in the kitchen have given Bombay Club a much-needed jolt. Gone is the overambitious menu of 100+ martinis. In its place, a pared-down list of martinis and cocktails that span the history of tippling, from the 1860s era Martinez (gin, sweet vermouth, Luxardo, orange bitters, twist) to contemporary pours like the Meat and Potato Martini (Chopin potato vodka garnished with andouille). “Miss Charming” (a.k.a. wandering celebrity mixologist Cheryl Charming) is behind the bar on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Executive chef Ricky Cheramie, a Louisiana native who has worked in restaurants including K-Paul’s, Commander’s Palace, and Emeril’s, has also tweaked the dinner menu. Look for local favorites like crab cakes with mirliton slaw, fried oysters Rockefeller, and grilled romaine Caesar along with a solid lineup of steaks and seafood dishes. Low-key local musicians play live music every night, and there’s usually a good mix of seasoned travelers and regulars gathered here around happy hour and dinner on Friday and Saturday.
